LGBT & Friends Hiking Group – March 2019
TODAY’S HIKE IS CANCELED DUE TO UNSAFE MUDDY CONDITIONS
Aloha Maui Hikers-
We hope you will be able to join us on March 9th as we hike:
Makamakaole Stream “13 Crossings”
Where: Past Waihe’e and before Kahakuloa on Highway 340
Length: 2.5+/- Miles (Round Trip) + 1 mile
Time: 3 hours +/-
Difficulty: 3.5 of 5 (5 being most difficult)
Elevation: 813 ft
Parking: Very Limited along road (we will need to car pool)
We will meet at 8:30am at the Starbucks parking lot at the Queen Kaahumanu mall and then carpool from there. There is VERY LITTLE Parking at the trailhead so we will want to carpool as much as we can. We will leave the parking lot by 8:45am and be at the Trailhead by 9:15 am.
The Makamakaole Stream runs down the north slope of West Maui, one of the least developed regions of our island. This hike is nicknamed “13 Crossings,” because that is the number of times the trail crosses the stream through a bamboo forest before the trail ends at a waterfall. After this hike we will cross the street and go see 3 more waterfalls on the ocean side. Just beautiful!
The trail head is located 8/10 mile west of mile marker 7 on highway 340 (except we’re told that Mile markers “6” and “7” are often reported as missing — so we need to drive 2.8 miles past mile marker “5” on highway 340). There is room for 2-3 cars to park right at the entrance to the trail head 3 cars about 100 feet before and 3 cars 100 feet after the trailhead.
We are told that the GPS noted the coordinates for this “parking location” as: N 20 57.500 W156 32.085 (elevation 813 ft.) for anyone interested
