Mark your calendars to join us on April 13th as we head to Haleakala to hike Haleamau’u Trail (The Switchbacks!)
Some details to get you excited about Haleamau’u:
The hike begins gently, with a slightly downhill walk through wide paths and native scrub. It’s a nice way to get your legs warmed up for the real test: the switchbacks, which descend about 1,000 feet until leveling off at the valley floor. Maui is even more gorgeous from this dramatic vantage point, and you’ll get some awesome bird-eye-views of remote Keanae Valley. The Haleamau’u Trail parking lot and trail head are at 8,000 feet marker, and the hike down to Holua Cabin is 3.7 miles each way. Our plan is to hike as far down the switch backs as our group feels comfortable.
The weather at this elevation can change suddenly (i.e. clouds, mist). That said, please come prepared. Layering is your best defense, as will be a waterproof jacket. And sunscreen is a must, even when it’s chilly. Comfort is key.
Length: The full trail is 7.4 miles (3.7 each way) and as a group we will decide how far to go.
Elevation change: 1000 feet
Level of Difficulty: 3.75 or 4 of 5 This one is a great workout.
What to bring: Water + extra water – 2-3 bottles, snack, rain jacket (in case), sun screen
What to wear: Think layers and comfort! It can be chilly. Rain proof jacket, hiking boots or sturdy sneakers
Driving Directions: If you plan to meet us at the trail head, Halemau’u Trail is located inside Haleakala National Park. At approximately 14.2 miles up Highway 378, you’ll see the parking lot for Halemau’u Trail on the left across from the 8000 Foot Elevation Sign. We should get there by 10am. It is a little over an hour and 15 minute drive from Kahului to the Trailhead.
