Aloha Maui Hikers-

Please join us on Saturday (October 14th) for our Waihou Springs Hike.

Waihou Springs is an experimental forest of pines that was planted by the USGS and Hawaii’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife planted in the 1920s. The Trail follows the Waihou Springs Forest Reserve tree plantation road and descends southward to the Waihou Springs gulch below. Monterey cypress and eucalyptus trees can be seen, as well as the native tree species `ala`a, halapepe, and koa. The boulder-strewn gulch bottom marks the end of the trail. Looking up from the gulch, hikers can see a series of small water-diversion tunnels cut into the side of the rock face.

From Airport in Kahului, turn right on Hana Highway (Hwy. 36) and continue driving north until the next intersection, where you will turn right onto Haleakala Highway (Hwy. 37) up toward Haleakala. Turn left on Makawao Avenue (Hwy. 365). Once in Makawao, turn right on Olinda Road. Continue all the way up winding skinny road till you see the bird sanctuary (Olinda Endangered Species Propagation facility) on your left, then you will enter the redwood forests and keep an eye right for the pullover spot and trail. Parking is available on the right before the Forest Reserve gate.
